Recombination in the genus Cucurbita.

چکیده
ARIOUS structural and physiological barriers to recombination in species Vhyb rids often impose rigorous limitations upon the extent to which the characters of one species may be combined with those of another. Among such barriers structural and genic imbalance resulting in the differential elimination of gametes and zygotes of recombination types has often been mentioned (ANDERSON 1939; DEMPSTER 1949; STEBBINS 1945; STEPHENS 1950). Others can be pleiotropy and linkage (ANDERSON 1939; DEMPSTER 1949) ; the multiple factor control of character differences between parental types (DEMPSTER 1949; SMITH 1950) ; developmental restrictions imposed by similar relative growth patterns (SMITH 1950) ; and affinity, a newly formulated theory which “proposes that centromeres of the same ancestral origin tend to travel to the same pole,” (WALLACE 1960). It was the objective of this investigation to determine the amount of recombination occurring in the species cross C. pepo X C. moschata, and to reveal the nature of restrictions to recombination between the two species.

Cucumis SSR Markers Applied to the Study of Genetic Diversity in the Cucurbita Genus
The genus Cucurbita L. includes five cultivated species. C. pepo L., C. maxima Duchesne, and C. moschata Duchesne are the three most economically important. A high level of morphological and agronomical variability exists within these species. Large collections of Cucurbita landraces with a high potential value for breeding are maintained elsewhere. The COMAV’s Genebank at the Polytechnic Unive...
متن کاملNucleic Acid Hybridization Studies within the Genus Cucurbita.
The DNAs of Cucurbita species were examined by several methods. All Cucurbita DNAs have a similar CsCl isopycnic banding pattern consisting of a major band at 1.695 g/cc and a well separated satellite band at 1.707 g/cc. Compared to other plant and animal genera, Cucurbita species have a large genomic proportion of rDNA; this value ranging from 1.4% to 3.1%. The genomic proportion of rDNA was f...
متن کاملTranslocation of structural P proteins in the phloem.
Phloem-specific proteins (P proteins) are particularly useful markers to investigate long-distance trafficking of macromolecules in plants. In this study, genus-specific molecular probes were used in combination with intergeneric grafts to reveal the presence of a pool of translocatable P protein subunits. Immunoblot analyses demonstrated that Cucurbita spp P proteins PP1 and PP2 are translocat...
متن کاملThe Use and Development of Molecular Breeding Tools in Cucurbita: A Literature Review
Tools for molecular mapping and marker-assisted selection are being increasingly applied to the genus Cucurbita. However, much of the work which has already been done has remained unpublished, or has been published in journals of limited circulation, such that many who work with Cucurbita may not be aware of it. This review of the literature to date is intended to provide some background for cu...
متن کاملFirst known image of Cucurbita in Europe, 1503-1508.
BACKGROUND The genus Cucurbita (pumpkin, squash, gourd) is native to the Americas and diffused to other continents subsequent to the European contact in 1492. For many years, the earliest images of this genus in Europe that were known to cucurbit specialists were the two illustrations of C. pepo pumpkins that were published in Fuchs' De Historia Stirpium, 1542. Images of fruits of two Cucurbita...
